Youngstown, OH native George "Shotgun" Shuba spent seven seasons in Major League Baseball with the Brooklyn Dodgers, playing left field and coming off the bench as a pinch-hitter extroardinare from 1948-55. Alongside his time in the bigs Shuba also appeared in the minors every season from the age of 19 in 1944 through 1951, then again in both 1956 and 1957 before retiring from professional baseball. Despite his well documented pinch-hitting heroics with the Dodgers, Shuba is most remembered as the man who shook Jackie Robinson's hand in solidarity following Jackie's April 18, 1946 home run during his debut with the Montreal Royals. Jackie's International League premier integrated professional baseball for the first time in the modern era, paving the way for him to shatter Major League Baseball's color line with the Brooklyn Dodgers the following season. This tremendous collection of original photographs spans the entirety of George Shuba's minor league career from his earliest days with the 1944 Olean Oilers, to his time as Jackie Robinson's teammate with the Montreal Royals in 1946, to his final season as a pro ballplayer with the 1957 Memphis Chickasaws.
