This dapper portrait of manager and umpire George "Watch" Burnham displays well in spite of tack holes and ink marks along its right edge that inform this SGC POOR 1 technical grade. The well-contrasted image shows Burnham's suit, hat, and, crucial to his nickname, pocket watch. What led to this oft-used and eccentric nickname? One story says the actual watch that beget his name belonged to Hall of Fame player Joe Kelley, who'd received it earlier from teammates. Kelley objected to an in-game call by Burnham, safekeeper of that same watch, and Joe unknowingly destroyed his own timepiece during their ensuing altercation.
Burnam appears on Old Judge cards in just this one pose, unlike players who often received four or more. While a difficult card to locate in any condition, this will appeal most to those seeking Old Judge's eccentric entries, given Burnham's non-player and stately presentation. Combined population reports show about a dozen graded examples, making any quality image an important keepsake. Just remember what Joe learned: don't ask someone to hold it for you and then get into a fight with them soon after.
