Few players in the entire lexicon of baseball history excite collectors the way Mickey Mantle does. The legendary Yankee outfielder is the subject of the hobby"s most valuable postwar card the focal point of many debates ("Willie Mickey or Duke?") and perhaps the most popular postwar player in the minds of collectors. Indeed Mickey Mantle is often given credit for jump-starting the modern baseball card collecting hobby simply due to his overwhelming popularity.Presented is a beautiful signed example of his 1962 Topps special card #318 "The Switch Hitter Connects." The card illustrates the powerful left-handed swing of the switch-hitting Mantle; he hit 369 of his 536 career home runs from the left side of the plate. Mantle"s 1962 season was stellar; he hit a whopping .321 with a .486 on base percentage. He crushed 30 home runs in 502 at bats and drove in 89 winning the American League MVP and a Gold Glove to boot.Mantle carefully signed this card in bold black marker across the three panels but underneath his image with his famous signature framed by the borders of the card. The card itself is in decent shape as well with four square corners and reasonable centering. 1962 Topps are known for chipping along the borders and this example is no different but it"s the strength of the signature and not the condition of the card that makes this a special item.Certified authentic by PSA/DNA.
