Important example of Hall of Fame outfielder Tommy McCarthy, one of his nine poses known in the N172 Old Judge Cigarettes issue. Catalogued as card #301-8, Tommy stands ready to throw his ball back to the infield, standing against an outdoor backdrop. This 1889 version of his 301-8 pose appears with the nameplate "McCarthy, C.F., St. Louis" and a white square along its left edge.

The white square tells us something about how Old Judge repurposed their many player poses. An editor added it by hand to an existing cabinet photo, and its complete text (when not cropped) reads, "Copyrighted 1888 by Goodwin & Co., N.Y." There's also a smudged section above Tommy's nameplate where script was rubbed out when updating this card's design. (Perhaps they cropped its white square when adding a new 1889 copyright above "Old Judge.")

The PSA GOOD 2 grade has a lot of positives, in particular for a Hall of Famer. Tommy's image quality retains modest definition, with some blending into the background tone, and all nameplate typography is readable. Corners and edges show wear, mostly at the lower left, with toning and storage marks on the reverse. Its population report shows just seven graded examples, all similar to this grade, apart from a 6 with qualifiers.
