What we now call T206 ran from 1909 through 1911 in cigarette and loose tobacco packs across 16 different brands produced by the American Tobacco Company. It contained over 500 major and minor-league players and is known informally as "White Border" or "the Monster" thanks to its clean design and ambitious set size. While William Barbeau's MLB career with St. Louis was winding down by T206's launch, the set covered enough minor league teams that his long pro career in the American Association could well qualify him for a card.
The PSA VG-EX 4 grade reflects slightly rounded corners and centering a touch northward. Its bright colors remain undimmed by the last century and appears to have been well cared for. The printing on this tougher Cycle back is bold and clean. (A spot of extra red under his brim gives the impression of a shiner that might or might not have been on its original photo.) The population report shows 19 total for this player and back combination, with just three higher! While almost any Cycle proves back hard to find, midgrade examples for Barbeau in particular are as good as he gets.
