Distributed by Sporting Life magazine between 1910 and 1911, the M116 issue features elegant lithography and a roster of baseball's greatest legends, utilizing illustrated versions of iconic Carl Horner portrait photos. Long overshadowed by the T206 tobacco issue, M116 cards have recently become more appreciated by advanced collectors for their print quality, iconic images, and outstanding player selection.
In comparison with the plentiful nature of the T206 Cobb cards, PSA has only graded around 100 examples of his M116 offering (their population reports are unclear, as they initially did not differentiate between this and the blue-background example of his M116 card). Just six of those examples have graded higher than this, a sharp, clean example with an outstanding pink-tinged pastel image. Though the image is centered somewhat to the right on the canvas, it does not impact the visual appeal of the card due to the light-colored background. It is safe to say that the centering is the only factor that keeps the card from attaining an even higher grade, as its sharpness is quite remarkable. A tremendous card that seldom makes itself available in this type of condition.
