This T206 card shows Newark fielder Bud Sharpe, whose athletic talents and fan popularity were limited by recurring illnesses that ended his playing career at 30 and life at just 34. Its printing process for this Piedmont series dropped most of the "R" leg from "Sharpe" and created an inadvertant error ("Shappe") in that process. Based on the SGC population report, it proves a tough variation to locate within T206.
The SGC EX/NM 6 grade reflects Bud's strong central image and color, with clean borders and touched corners. Its centering is northward with an ever-so-slight print tilt. (The small surface marks could result from the print process or from later handling.) T206 hatless portraits give a strong feeling of their era and this "Shappe" version's graded at a fraction of the rate of its normal "Sharpe" card. The population report shows just 14 graded for this error and none higher!
