Striking horizontal image of Cuban legend and longtime MLB hurler Dolph Luque, who pitched for a pair of MLB World Series winners and played at least 25 pro seasons in all, including winter league squads in his native land like the 1923-24 Havana shown on this card. It would be hard to find any living baseball fan between WWI and WWII who hadn't heard about Luque's achievements.
The Nacionales cigar company put baseball players and scenes on 40 of its 1000 card, multi-subject set, with Dolph appearing in its handful of distinctive horizontal poses. The SGC VG 3 grade reflects touched corners, some haze on the reverse, and a possible slant to the top edge from its production process. While Luque appears on many cards from his lengthy career, the population report shows seven graded singles and just two higher than this elegant example.
