This SGC PR 1 grade, dinged for its dinged corner, shows a Negro League rookie of sorts, as the known MLB stats for Jesse "Mountain" Hubbard begin with his 1923 season. This winter league set shows him in the cap for Alemendares, where he likely pitched and played the field, reflecting his multitalented stateside play. Hubbard appears in just two known baseball issues, both from challenging winter league teams, so every card is a treasure! The SGC population shows just eight of his Billiken cards encapsulated.
1923-24 Billikens were produced for that winter league baseball season as cigar premiums during a short, active period for Cuban card issues. They feature real player photos, leaving them somewhat more vulnerable to fading and handling damage than more conventional cardboard sets. They can retain beautiful detail and document a number of players from that era who don't appear on many cards or photos. Love of the Game is pleased to offer several cards from this set as part of our larger offering of Cuban issues.
