1965 black and white Type I photo of astronaut Ed White in the act of becoming the first American to walk in space. This iconic, instantly recognizable image hails from June 3, 1965 after White, the pilot of NASA's Gemini 4, had just exited the capsule secured only by an eight meter life-supporting umbilical and tether. White remained floating in space for approximately 20 minutes, traveling an incredible 6,500 miles in the process. Large 8" x 10" photo with earth in the background remains clean throughout with bright-white borders and verso. Two notations have been added to verso with one a copyright notice attributing the image to NASA, and the other dated to June 3, 1965 stating: "Ed White's extra vehicular activity during third orbit of four days mission." Authenticated and encapsulated as a Type I photo by PSA/DNA.
