George Mullin's success on the mound for Detroit reflected his skill and durability. He won three of seven World Series starts as a Tiger and his 2.02 postseason era hints what could have been with more run support. Mullin remains #2 on the all-time franchise win list, trailing only another prewar stalwart, Hooks Dauss.
As with several other black-and-white proofs offered in this auction, the card stands out because of what's missing: color. SGC grades this variation as E97 Briggs Lozenge because their otherwise shared design and checklist lacks color print passes and advertising on their backs. The SGC PR 1 reflects some surface staining and spots of loss. Mullin himself remains clear and recognizable and his card's an accessible example from this tough set. Its population report shows just six graded examples!
