Love of the Game is proud to offer cards featuring Black Sox starter Eddie Cicotte in this auction, a man who rode the entire rollercoaster from heights of stardom through a signature scandal and major league expulsion.
This PSA VG 3 Cicotte offers more than expected for something of its technical grade. Few Herpolsheimer-sponsored cards survived to the modern day, with just three shown on the population report! While its touched corners and mark at upper-left merit PSA's score, Eddie's image registration and clarity present like something higher and would be at home in any mid-grade collection.
Eddie Cicotte looms larger than most within the Black Sox scandal, driving his hobby prominence far above your average pennant winner. As starting pitcher, he excercised real influence over Chicago's chances to win in 1919 and delivered a pair of poor efforts in losses that put his team in a hole on their road to infamy. Long after his expulsion from the game by Commissioner Landis, Cicotte would claim that he spent 45 years of clean living to make up for his bad choices. Whatever peace that life brought him after baseball, cards showing one of Chicago's "eight men out" remain alive with cunning and controversy.
