Yet another extremely rare 19th Century set the N690 Kalamazoo Bats cards were manufactured by Chas. Gross & Co of Philadelphia to advertise Kalamazoo Bats cigarettes. Each card featured a photograph attached to a cardboard back that was either blank or featured a redemption ad by which smokers could obtain various prizes in exchange for cards. This dual-player card features Athletics catcher Jocko Milligan tagging out his teammate outfielder Henry Larkin. By the 1888 season Milligan would be with the St. Louis Browns having been traded at the end of the 1887 campaign. An extremely interesting image with a nature scene backdrop only partially obscuring the wall of the building behind them. Equally interesting is the early baseball glove on Milligan's left hand. The card has been trimmed and skinned and ultimately was mounted on a scrapbook page with a number of other K-Bat cards and sold to an advanced collector in a private transaction several years ago. The card was subsequently detatched and holdered for protection by SGC. With N690 cards as with many other scarce 19th Century issues it is not the technical grade that is important but the quality of the image. This is an outstanding example of an extremely rare card.
