As noted in other Al Smith listings from this Love of the Game auction, some 1950 Hage's poses call him "Al" and others "Alphonse." Four are considered "fielding" poses, with grading companies combining them somewhat in population reports. All poses continue to be tough finds, with no more than four of each confirmed.

The SGC VG 3 grade reflects touched corners and a surface wrinkle with flecked ink at upper-left. Note the slanted top edge is a photo cropping issue, as its lower border remains even and parallel. The reverse shows clear, clean printing for its Hage's bio, so will be of particular interest to ad back collectors. The combined SGC/PSA population reports note just two cards of this fielding pose, making scarcity an important factor for PCL set builders.

Hage's Dairy of Southern California sponsored regional card sets from 1949-51, offered at concession stands for Lane Field Park, home of the PCL San Diego Padres. Most came packaged with popcorn and it's possible others entered the hobby via company or team promotions. 1950 singles prove tough indeed to find, as the PSA population report counts 66 total graded for its 128-player checklist. All 1950 cards come with black-and-white fronts and use similar text size for player and team names, distinguishing it from Hage's other years.
