c.1915 Type III photo of Jack Johnson, the first African-American world heavyweight champion. Johnson is pictured while in training for his upcoming contest against 6' 6" heavyweight, Jess Willard, that took place on April 9, 1915. In a controversial upset, Willard dethroned The Big Smoke, knocking him out in the 26th round of a scheduled 45-round fight. Approx 8" x 8.5" photo appears to have been recently trimmed to it's current dimensions and exhibits razor sharp edges and corners. Date stamping of April 6, 1915 has been applied to verso, along with a secondary stamp at the center and a handwritten inscription reading: "Jack Johnson in training quarters at Havana." Authenticated and encapsulated as a Type III photo by PSA/DNA.
