The 1955 baseball season is one of the most memorable with its memorabilia among the most widely-collected of every postwar baseball season. A monster 51 home run 127 RBI season from Willie Mays, 20-win seasons from both Don Newcombe and Robin Roberts, and a tight American League race between the Yankees and Indians that went right down to the wire were all overshadowed by one of the most dramatic World Series in history. The 1955 World Series, sealed by Sandy Amoros' game-saving catch in Game 7, remains legendary among New Yorkers and vintage collectors. The 1955 Topps baseball set is among the most desirable and valuable of all the Topps issues. Presented here is an outstanding mixed-grade Topps baseball set from that year. For all the reasons above as well as for containing the rookie cards of Hall of Famers Roberto Clemente, Sandy Koufax and Harmon Killebrew, the 1955 Topps issue remains one of the company's most popular.
This is an original owner set, well cared-for by the collector who assembled it. The cards are clean and bright, the colors vivid. The cards have been handled, but carefully so, without undue stress on the corners and edges. Sadly, at some point in their life, some of the cards were damaged by water, resulting in wrinkling and overall waviness, and sports of dirt or foxing on some. A breakdown of the set is as follows: 6% EX, 12% VG-EX, 23% VG, 27% GOOD, 20% FAIR, and 11% POOR. The majority of the lower grades are cards impacted by the moisture damage.
We have selected nine cards to be graded by SGC. The grades, along with the grades of the remaining ungraded keys, is as follows: #2 Williams (SGC GOOD+ 2.5), #4 Kaline (SGC VG/EX 4), #19 Herman (VG), #24 Newhouser (VG), #28 Banks (PSA VG 3), #31 Spahn (PSA VG-EX 4), #47 Aaron (SGC GOOD+ 2.5), #50 Robinson (SGC VG/EX 4), #100 Irvin (F), #123 Koufax (SGC VG 3), #124 Killebrew (SGC GOOD+ 2.5), #155 Mathews (P), #164 Clemente (SGC GOOD+ 2.5), #187 Hodges (F), #189 Rizzuto (F), #194 Mays (SGC VG 3), #198 Berra (SGC VG 3) #210 Snider (PSA PR 1). A very strong original owner collection of one of the most widely-collected of all vintage Topps sets. 206 cards total.
