Beautiful example of the print A Base Ball Game by Canadian artist Henry Sandham, produced in 1897 by Boussad, Valadou & Co. of Paris, London and The Hague. Extraordinarily rare, the colorful piece is produced with a proprietary technique called Goupilgravure, a process perfected by Henri Rousselon of Goupil & Cie. in France, which allowed for a deeper, more rich separation of tones and a more sharp image than traditional photogravures. The print is truly extraordinary, a brilliant, colorful example matted and framed to a finished size of 50" wide by 30" in height.

Originally produced in 1894, the game appearing in the illustration has been established as depicting a game in the 1894 Temple Cup series, between the Baltimore Orioles and New York Giants. Sandham's original painting of this scene resides in the permanent collection at the Baseball Hall of Fame. "The Temple Cup Print" is considered one of the definitive pieces of 19th Century baseball memorabilia and is one of the most desirable of all baseball display items.  The print appears in several variations; this example is particularly rare. Further, the color versions of this print are often found trimmed to the image; a close examination of this piece reveals an artist credit at the lower-left underneath the image, the word "Goupilgravure" at the lower right. Further underneath the image, revealed by the cut out in the matte, is the title A Base Ball Game, along with copyright date of 1897 and information regarding the producer of the piece. We have provided inset photos of these credits on our website.

The print itself appears to be in outstanding condition with no evidence of restoration that we can identify; the exceptional framing job prevents us from conducting an inspection of the edges or reverse.  An exquisite example of one of the most important of all 19th Century baseball pieces; an extremely rare and important photogravure of Hy Sandham's legendary "Temple Cup Print."

Please note that the size, weight and delicate nature of this item requires that there will be a significant additional shipping charge, which covers the cost of FedEx Ground delivery plus extra protective shipping materials.
