Brooklyn-born pop artist Steve Sax has had his works exhibited at the Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, Mickey Mantle's restaurant, and he has created more than 50 commissioned murals - among them a 100 x 40 foot mural at the TD North Bank Center in Boston. Schooled at the Art Students League from 1979-1984 where he studied under famed painter Harvey Dinnerstein, as well as at the School of Visual Arts where he majored in Fine Arts & Illustration, Sax approaches his work with a traditional Old Master education combined with a humorous style from his influence of Mad and Cracked magazines.  His illustration and cartoon work has been published in such notable publications as the New York Times and Forbes, and he has created more than 50 commissioned murals for companies as large as AT&T and IBM. Butler Museum Director Dr. Louis Zona writes "Sax extends the tradition of American Pop.  His works play on America's popular culture with techniques that reflect America's love affair with the cartoon image."

We met Steve several years ago and took the opportunity to tour his impressive studio, then in Woodstock, NY. His sports work covers all four major sports and all eras, often signed by the subject. Steve often paints on plywood, layering carved images on top of one another to create a three-dimensional effect.  His work often combines a rich color palette with exaggerated features, both fresh and familiar at once.

In the case of "Satch," Sax elected to work on canvas, painting the great Satchel Paige in his Kansas City Monarchs uniform, in an exaggerated pitching delivery. The enormous 30 x 45" piece, created specifically for this auction, is an explosion of color, rich greens and blues set against the crisp whites and reds of Paige's uniform.  Satch's high leg kick and exaggerated delivery, combined with Sax' style, result in a hip, colorful, modern take on one of baseball's most legendary figures.

A beautiful, colorful piece of freshly created original artwork by a renowned artist, consigned direct from his studio.
