Though he was best-known for his creation of the "Brooklyn Bum," Willard Mullin was a widely-known daily cartoonist for the New York World-Telegram and Sun as well as for the Sporting News, who also drew cover illustrations for the yearbooks of the Brooklyn Dodgers, New York Giants, New York Mets and Harlem Globetrotters.  Mullin was, perhaps, the most beloved and best-known baseball cartoonist ever. Even today, Mullin's Brooklyn Bum is one of the most widely-recognized baseball-related characters ever created.

Presented here is a marvelously detailed pen and ink illustration for the 1958 All-Star game. Featuring managers Casey Stengel and Fred Haney sitting atop large baseballs, the managers are surrounded by a flurry of "stars," into many are printed the names of the various American and National League players featured on the 1958 teams.  Intended to measure four column inches across. the illustration leaves space at the top left and bottom right corners for newspaper copy.  An incredibly detailed illustration for a sports cartoon, the piece is large, handsomely framed to a finished size of 21" x 27". An outstanding example of how newspaper comic art can make for an outstanding artistic display.
