Severely worn Old Mill card of Southern Leaguer "Scoops" Carey, his nickname often creating confusion with Hall of Famer Max Carey. This particular Carey is first baseman and career minor leaguer George Carey, who managed bits of four major league seasons during his lengthy career, right around the turn of the century. His best season was with the 1902 Washington Senators, with which he batted .314 with 35 doubles and 11 triples. Nicknamed "Scoops" for his defensive skill at first base, Carey's batting performance declined in 1903, and he was traded to the Nashville Volunteers of the Single-A Southern Association. By that time, "Scoops" was 32, and although he would play for eight more seasons, he would never again see the majors. He is not Max Carey, who actually received the nickname "Scoops" in homage to this Carey.
