Exceptional Type I rookie photo of twenty-eight-year-old civil rights icon and color line pioneer, Jack Roosevelt Robinson. Hailing from the lens of official Brooklyn Dodgers team photographer, Barney Stein, Robinson has been photographed during a 1947 pre-season series between the Dodgers and New York Yankees that occurred between April 11-13, 1947, just days prior to Robinson's official major league debut on April 15. This is evidenced by both the zip-front jersey style Robinson is wearing (from the team's 1946 campaign and worn by Robinson early in 1947) and by comparing this image to others known to have been captured during the same series. Research has also revealed this image was published in the June, 1947 issue of Line Drives, the official Brooklyn Dodgers newsletter, further attributing the scene to early in the 1947 season. Barney Stein has chosen to depict Robinson from the waist up with a shallow depth of field, blurring the background details behind the future Hall of Famer to boldly bring him into the foreground. A gently sepia toned photograph measuring 6.5" x 8.5" overall, this exciting fresh to the hobby discovery originates from the estate of former teammate Clyde King who played for the Brooklyn Dodgers alongside Robinson during the late 1940's and early 1950's. Photo remains in fabulous overall condition with only a hint of abrasion to bottom corners and evidence of removal from a sticky album on verso. Verso also displays Barney Stein's personal credit stamping applied in black along the right edge. Authenticated and encapsulated as a Type I photo by PSA/DNA.
