Following one of the greatest single-seasons of all-time, superstar teammates Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig embarked on their celebrated barnstorming tour in 1927, competing in exhibition contests across 21 cities while raising funds for charity from coast to coast. Organized by sports agent, Christy Walsh, the tour pitted Ruth's Bustin Babe's against Gehrig's Larrupin Lou's and notably featured many contests west of the Mississippi where fans had no access to major league clubs. The presented Type I photo hails from 1928, the second and final year of the future Hall of Fame pair's barnstorming crusade. Ruth and Gehrig are pictured at Dexter Park in Brooklyn, presenting trophies to local boys just three days after sweeping the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1928 World Series. A rare and important photograph taken before a reported crowd of 22,000 adoring fans on October 12, 1928 as Ruth and Gehrig prepared to take on a local semi-pro team known as the Bushwick All-Stars. Fresh to the hobby 8" x 10" exhibits obvious creasing and chipping along the top edge that does not impact the expertly developed, crisp central image. A full paper caption remains affixed to verso, describing the scene, with credit stamping from the Associated Press below. Authenticated and encapsulated as a Type I photo by PSA/DNA.
