The "mother set" of 1927 York Caramels birthed several offspring, mostly ice cream related but also resulting in a game set of sorts with 1928's W502. The W502 issue is an enigma. Similar in size and appearance to the ice cream cards of 1928, the W502 cards contain no information on the card which would identify the issuer. About half the cards from the W502 issue were produced with blank backs. The remaining examples were printed with game play information on the reverse ("home run," "three bagger," "two bagger," or "one bagger").

According to hobby researcher Al Crisafulli who conducted some research into this set some years ago, blank backs account for approximately half the population of W502s, with "One Bagger" backs accounting for approximately a quarter. The blank backs likely represent outs in the game play, though the method of play remains elusive. Though the manufacturer of the cards is unknown, it is likely that the cards were made available by a retail store, or packaged inside some type of candy. They are relatively scarce today, rising in popularity as the 1920s photographic issues finally get their due.

Burleigh Grimes is the subject of the example offered here, graded EX 5 by SGC. Centering is just south on the canvas, with light surface wear especially visible in the top left corner. This example features the rare "Three Bagger" back. This is an extraordinary example seldom seen with this sort of visual appeal.

SGC has only ever graded 7 total examples of this 1928 W502, with NONE receiving a higher grade than the EX 5 offered here of Hall of Famer Burleigh Grimes.
