Back in 1911, you could collect a player on cardboard, a button, thin
paper, leather, or even silk. The latter is what we have here: an S74 colored silk featuring Hall of Famer Frank Chance. Two varieties
of these were issued, with the colored silks being larger and featuring
more players than the "white silks" that were also available. Both
styles reproduce the player's image from the T205 Gold Border set and,
as you can imagine, it's hard to find these in nice shape today.
Centering is gorgeous on the silk, with the dark blue ink presenting very boldly against the light blue silk background. The image is strong and detailed, and the silk is clean with light wear
visible. What looks like some light wear and
surface staining visible on the reverse is mostly just the ink from the front showing through to the back. While there is some light fraying and discoloration at the top and bottom edges, the image itself is unaffected and still looks beautiful.
SGC has only ever graded 10 total examples of this Turkey Red S74 Colored Silk, with NONE receiving a higher grade than the EX 5 offered here of Hall of Famer Frank Chance.
