Issued by R. C. Brown & Co. of New York, the c.1880's H804-4 Capadura Cigar trade cards
depict humorous scenes of men in baseball poses. Trade cards were an effective method of 19th Century advertising as
collectors would strive to complete sets and often filled scrapbooks
with the colorful lithographic cards. The cards from this set typically
feature an "Imperial Segar Manufactory" ad on the reverse, touting the
Cuban tobacco of Capadura Segars. The 3 1/4" x 5"
cards are printed on thin paper stock, with five different cards in the complete set.
Offered here is the "Where Will You Have Them?" card from the set, graded VG 3 by SGC. While many Capadura Cigar cards are found with the borders trimmed (as
are many other trade cards), this example remains intact and in remarkable
condition despite its age and the fragile nature of the paper on which
the card is printed. Some light soiling in the bottom left corner keeps it from grading even higher than it already has, but this one has tremendous eye appeal and displays beautifully.
SGC has only ever graded 4 total examples of this H804-4 Capadura Cigar trade card, with NONE receiving a higher grade than the VG 3.offered here of the "Where Will You Have Them?" issue.
