Louis W. "Jumbo" Schoeneck played 70 games for the Chicago Maroons of the Western Association in 1888. Though primarily a First Baseman, he did pitch three innings that season, striking out two batters while allowing three hits and three runs. This example depicts the 6'2" 223-pound Maroon in his Chicago uniform, holding a bat in his hands, resting it on his right shoulder.
Centering is west on the canvas, with diamond cutting prevalent. While everything below Schoeneck's shoulders is clear, his head and the bat above that height are slightly blurry, indicating movement while the photo was being taken. If it were an issue with development, the entire image would have been blurry, not just one area, but you can actually see a ghosted image of his bat in the frame, as well. Contrast is nice, with the dark printing holding true even after 135 years. The card's technical grade can be explained by the back, where there is some writing, as well as some paper loss and residue due to a prior removal of the card from a scrapbook or photo album. Those issues do not affect the front of the card, only its grade.
