The N43 Allen & Ginter issue of 1888 is among the most beautiful of all 19th Century lithographic cards. The "World's Champions" cards were larger versions of
the company's standard-sized cards, classified today as N29. As is the
case with the N29 issue, the N43 set features athletes from multiple sports
with six baseball players included among its 50 cards.
The larger
format of the cards permits
additional color lithography to the left and right of the cards which
makes them extraordinarily attractive, among the most beautiful 19th
Century issues ever produced. The cards are extremely desirable today.
Presented here is a collector-grade N43 card of Chicago center fielder James Ryan.
Graded
Good 2 by SGC, the card is colorful and nicely centered. Rounded corners, soft edges, and some faint soiling on the front keep this card from grading even higher than it already has.
A wear pattern on the reverse, possibly remnants of a previous life affixed to the page of a scrapbook or photo album, further explains the card's technical grade. A tremendous type card from a popular and beautiful 19th Century issue.
SGC
has only ever graded 25 total examples of this N43, with only ten receiving
a higher grade than the Good 2 offered here of James Ryan.
