While Topps had a stranglehold on cards of current players throughout the 1960s and 70s businessmen Tom Collier and Mike Aronstein hatched a plan to produce cards of players from the past marketed under the TCMA brand. Utilizing simplistic designs that focused on clean photographs the company's larger mainstream sets were interesting alternatives to young collectors who wanted to learn about the players of yesteryear. Their 1979 issue "The Fifties" borrowed the classic design elements of 1953 Bowman cards the 291-subject set containing an outstanding balance of the decade's greatest stars regional heroes and journeymen delivered with full-color photography. The set is as complete a document of 1950s baseball as we have seen. What's incredible about this set however is not the cards themselves - the set on its own is fairly common. However our consignor found beauty in these cards and used them to assemble an absolutely staggering autographed set - a grand total of 229 of the set's 291 cards have been autographed! All the greats are present - from card #1 (Joe DiMaggio) to card #289 (Bob Miller); all but 24 of the cards that were possible to have signed when the set was issued have been autographed. Of those 24 three (Harry Simpson Luke Easter and Fred Martin) passed away the year the set was issued and two more (Ed Dick and Jim DePalo) never played an inning of major league ball and would be difficult to locate. All but three of the subjects who have not autographed their cards (Zack Monroe Foster Castleman and Dick Bokelman) have passed away. It would be very very difficult to improve upon this set as finding signed examples of the missing cards would be in most cases unlikely. The set may be common but a complete set with 229 autographs is anything but. What's more each of the cards are in superb condition with the overwhelming majority of technical grades in the EX-MT to NM range with many of the signatures obtained in person. Nearly all of the signatures are bold and dark applied beautifully to the front of the respective cards. The resulting display is exquisite. Autographs included in the set are as follows: #1 Joe DiMaggio (HOF) 2 Yogi Berra (HOF) 3 Warren Spahn (HOF) 4 Robin Roberts (
