George B. Treadway (erroneously spelled "Tredway" on the card) played 19 games for the St. Paul Apostles of the Western Association in 1889. He has five different poses in
the N172 set. Treadway was the subject of considerable controversy during his career, as rumors swirled around the league that he was African-American. Treadway continuously denied the rumors, and the Baltimore Afro-American investigated the rumors and declared them untrue. Eventually it was learned that Baltimore manager Ned Hanlon actually investigated the rumors prior to signing Treadway and also found them unfounded.
The corners and edges of this card are wonderfully sharp, though the card's grade of Authentic is due to evidence of trimming. Even still, this card has tremendous eye appeal, with Treadway holding his bat and looking at the camera in such a way as to dare a potential pitcher to throw one close to the strike zone against him. A beautiful image with nice contrast, the card remains sharp and clean.
