Charles Comiskey was the First Baseman for the St. Louis Browns of the American Association from 1882 through 1889, then again for one more season in 1891. In 1888, he led the league in At Bats with 576, as captain of the team. Comiskey would later become owner of the Chicago White Sox, and be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame as an Executive/Pioneer. The Old Roman has six different poses featured in
the Old Judge N172 set. This
issue depicts the First Baseman with his hands outstretched at shoulder height, awaiting a throw from a teammate for the out.
Comiskey is purposely centered within the image, and the dark, bold print leaves wonderful contrast to the emptiness of the background. The card's text is bold and easy to read, despite some minor paper loss at the bottom right corner. The back has some staining and shows signs of being removed from a scrapbook or
photo album, which does not affect the front of the card, but, along with evidence of trimming to the card edges, helps to explain the card's technical grade. The eye appeal of the card, however, far outweighs any issues with a lower technical grade. With SGC having graded just four examples, only two have graded above AUTHENTIC, and we're confident that the quality of this image rivals all of them.
