The first series of cards in the T206 set were issued beginning in
1909 in cigarette and loose tobacco packs through 16 different brands
owned by the American Tobacco Company. It is a landmark set in the
history of baseball card collecting due to its size and rarity, with
cards of over 500 major and minor-league players issued in the set
through 1911. It is known informally as the "White Border" set due to
the
distinctive white borders surrounding the quality color lithographs on
each card.
This card depicts pitcher Irv Young at the tail end of his brief career. Young -
who did not pitch in the majors until he was 28 years old - threw 378
innings in 1905, still a standing record for any rookie. Centering is just a shade west on the canvas, but the viewer's eyes are much more drawn to the gorgeous, colorful sky behind Young than the borders. Some overall soiling, particularly in the upper right corner, keeps this card from grading higher, though the corners and edges are consistent with a Good 2. The printing on the tough Cycle back is dark and beautiful, with some faint soiling around the perimeter the only flaw on the reverse.
PSA has only graded 7 total
examples of this T206 with a Cycle back of Minneapolis' Irv Young.
