Strong copy of Tim Murnane's New England Official Base Ball Guide for 1895. A former player, Murnane became a sportswriter and baseball editor for the Boston Globe, a role he served for three decades before dying of a heart attack at 65 years old in 1917. As Murnane had little money to care for his children and widow, the Baseball Writers Association of America set up a memorial fund for his family, and more than 17,000 people attended a benefit "all-star" game that generated $13,000 for the family. A photo from that game is available elsewhere in the auction.
52-page pocket-sized booklet appears in VG condition with wear and wrinkling at the spine and a few minor creases to the cover. Interior pages present well, its contents including statistics, rules, records, schedules, anecdotes and illustrations relating to the New England league and baseball in general. An exceptional piece.
