The first series of cards in the T206 set were issued beginning in
1909 in cigarette and loose tobacco packs through 16 different brands
owned by the American Tobacco Company. It is a landmark set in the
history of baseball card collecting due to its size and rarity, with
cards of over 500 major and minor-league players issued in the set
through 1911. It is known informally as the "White Border" set due to
the
distinctive white borders surrounding the quality color lithographs on
each card.
Hall of
Famer Walter Johnson sits for his portrait in front of a yellow gradient background in this T206 example. Nearly perfect centering with great corners and edges for the grade give this one a wonderful frame, perfectly matching Johnson's white uniform. A light stain in the bottom left corner and some general soiling around the perimeter keep this card from grading even higher than it already has. The (MK) qualifier comes from a number "8" written in black ink on the otherwise-nearly-flawless Piedmont back, whose only other knock against it would be some very minor soiling at the top border. This is a perfect example of "buy the card, not the grade," especially when it comes to a Hall of Famer like this.
