The first series of cards in the T206 set were issued beginning in
1909 in cigarette and loose tobacco packs through 16 different brands
owned by the American Tobacco Company. It is a landmark set in the
history of baseball card collecting due to its size and rarity, with
cards of over 500 major and minor-league players issued in the set
through 1911. It is known informally as the "White Border" set due to
the
distinctive white borders surrounding the quality color lithographs on
each card.
Clean, white borders make this portrait of the longtime Phillies catcher truly pop. Dooin's
white uniform with a black collar folded down takes up half the canvas,
but the solid green background and a red turtleneck undershirt give the
card some much needed bursts of color. Centering is north and slightly east on the canvas, which keeps the card from grading even higher than it has. The top left corner is a bit soft, but the others, along with the edges, are consistent with the grade. The
printing on the tough EPDG back is dark and bold, with the canvas beautifully clean. Some faint soiling to the left middle and a small surface abrasion do not affect the front, but also contribute to the card's technical grade. The lesser-known T206
backs are having a run of late, EPDG being one of the hottest.
SGC has only graded 10 total
examples of this T206 with an El Principe De Gales back, with only ONE ever
receiving a higher grade than the VG-EX+ 4.5 offered here of Philadelphia's Red Dooin.
