Enormous cabinet photo picturing the Princeton baseball team members from the class of 1880.  Measuring approximately 11 1/4" x 14", the photo inside the mount is in outstanding condition, with a few light areas of foxing and surface abrasion not interfering with the image at all.  Written on the mount in calligraphic ink is "Base Ball Nine, Class of '80. College Championship '78, '79 & '80".

The Princeton club included William S. Schenck, who is often credited with being the first catcher to use some sort of chest protector. Schenck stuffed copies of the college publication The Princetonian into his shirt for protection.  When Princeton played Harvard in 1880, a Boston sporting goods manufacturer heard this and created a crude chest protector, an early version of what catchers wear even today.
