Was he baseball's greatest home run hitter? That debate may never be put to rest. What's certain is that Josh Gibson was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1972 and he'll forever be immortalized in Cooperstown along with the greatest players that ever were. Following the merger of Major League Baseball's statistics with those of the Negro Leagues, Gibson is now considered the major league's all-time leader in batting average, further cementing his legacy. The presented wire photo depicts Gibson in a classic catching pose, captured during the 1930's, that has been reproduced across all forms of media numerous times over the decades. Card collectors may recognize that it served as inspiration for artist Bob Laughlin's card of Gibson in 1974's Old Time Black Stars set that has taken off both in popularity and value in recent months (card shown for reference purposes and is not included). Two dated paper captions appear on the verso, with earliest indicating this example hails from 1972. Please note this photo has been encapsulated as Type 4 under PSA's authentication system as the image was created from a UPI wire transmission of an existing photo, and not directly from an original negative. Measures 6.5" x 8".
