Grouping of 18 glass magic lantern slides depicting the 1914 Cleveland Naps at spring camp in Athens, GA. An impressively clean grouping overall with high quality, crisp images that present magnificently well. Black paper borders surrounding the 3.25" x 4" translucent slides remain fully intact, handsomely framing each scene. A small paper label remains affixed to lower-right corner of most, presumably for numbering purposes, though no markings are present. Included 1) Humorous hand-tinted color slide of Joe Jackson in a winter cap 2) Manager Joe Birmingham posed w/bat 3) Doc Johnson batting 4) Terry Turner fielding 5) First Basemen Doc Johnston, Roy Wood, John Knight, Gene Paulette posing together 6) Unidentified gentleman wearing chest protector 7) Jack Graney with his dog, Larry 8) First image taken of the team upon arrival in Athens, GA 9) The Georgian Hotel where the Naps stayed during camp 10) Doc Johnston throwing 11) Train full of unidentified individuals 12) Unidentified gentleman in throwing pose with glove 13) Jack Graney w/his dog, Larry 14) Manager Joe Birmingham with fortune teller. A related image was published in the Cleveland Plain Dealer on March 11, 1914 (provided for reference) 15) Main St. in Athens, GA 16) Prison, water tower, and City Hall in Athens, GA 17) Naps trainer, Charles Hitte administering treatment 18) Unidentified gentleman in chest protector (developed from a duplicate negative).

These slides originate from the estate of former Cleveland Plain Dealer staff photographer Frank W. Smith, who traveled with the Cleveland Naps to their spring facilities for many years during the 1910's. 18 of close to 60 glass magic lantern slides offered in our spring auction from the original photographer's collection. All slides from this collection have been professionally imaged and winning bidders will receive both the slides and a one-of-a-kind 8" x 10" archival quality print with their shipment.
