We have made the decision to break up an EXTRAORDINARY 1963 Topps set
- the #4 Master Set on the PSA Set Registry. The 1963 set is a
particularly difficult set to complete in high grade due to Topps' poor
quality control in the era which resulted in
considerable print defects. The large and colorful border at the bottom
simultaneously lends a distinctive design element and a condition
challenge, as they are extremely susceptible to
chipping and wear.
The example offered here is card #138, Pride of N.L., graded
MINT 9. 1963 was the final year of the illustrious career of Stan Musial, and Willie Mays was ready to take over as the game's greatest hitter. Musial finished with 475 career home runs. Willie passed that total 1965 on his way to 660 career homers, but couldn't catch up to Stan's hit total of 3,630, which stands at 4th place all time.
The two greats are pictured together here on this beautiful offering, talking hitting during batting practice before a game in St. Louis. Perfectly centered white borders surround the image, with crisp edges and sharp corners completing the look. A registration issue pushing the black border surrounding the photo a fraction of an inch to the left of where it should be is the only thing keeping this card from grading at a 10.
Only 6 out of the more than 3,100 examples graded by PSA have ever received a higher grade than the MINT 9 offered here.
