I have one to sell!
Another interesting and rare issue the 1973 Topps Baseball Comics were intended to serve as wax wrappers to be folded around a stick of bubble gum. The gum was not likely to have been publicly distributed at all as the surviving examples do not contain the folds that would be characteristic of having been wrapped around a piece of gum for any length of time. Some of the examples however including this Davis are marred by paper pulls consistent with the three glue spots that would be required to fold the wax around the gum an indicator that some examples were at least wrapped around gum during the proof stage.Almost all the surviving 1973 Topps Comics cards have received high grades. In fact of 114 examples of 1973 Topps Comics to have been graded by PSA just two have graded below EXCELLENT - both are PSA 1 and both are of Willie Davis. Based on this it may be safe to make the assumption that the Davis wrappers were among those that actually at one point were used as intended wrapped around gum and presented at Topps HQ. Unlike most of the surviving examples from this set this one at some point was likely actually wrapped around a piece of gum.1973 Topps Comics are extremely rare. In 2010 a complete set was sold at auction for nearly $18 000. During that auction it was noted that the rare set originated from the collection of hobby pioneer Woody Gelman who served as art director for Topps. It is speculated that all surviving examples originated from Gelman"s collection as he was able to obtain a small quantity of "cards" from this set for distribution to the hobby but all were destroyed by a 1970s fire at the warehouse of Card Collectors Company the card dealership Gelman owned. The only surviving examples of 1973 Topps Comics known to the hobby resided in Gelman"s personal collection. This is surely one of those copies one of just a few hundred examples of this entire set known to exist. They don"t get much more rare than this.Population DataPSA Population: 6 total graded 2 at this level 4 higherSGC Population: None graded
