We have made the decision to break up an EXTRAORDINARY 1963 Topps set
- the #4 Master Set on the PSA Set Registry. The 1963 set is a
particularly difficult set to complete in high grade due to Topps' poor
quality control in the era which resulted in
considerable print defects. The large and colorful border at the bottom
simultaneously lends a distinctive design element and a condition
challenge, as they are extremely susceptible to
chipping and wear.
The example offered here is card #115, Carl Yastrzemski, graded
NM-MT 8. 1963 was the first of 7 Gold Glove seasons, and the first of 18 All Star selections for the Hall of Famer. He led the league in hits, doubles, walks, batting average, and on-base percentage, foreshadowing the incredible career that was about to come. This card shows the 23-year-old in a gorgeous extreme close up, with strong corners and edges. A handful of fisheyes concentrated in the lower right corner of the card and centering just west on the canvas keep this one from grading even higher than it already has.
