We have made the decision to break up an EXTRAORDINARY 1963 Topps set
- the #4 Master Set on the PSA Set Registry. The 1963 set is a
particularly difficult set to complete in high grade due to Topps' poor
quality control in the era which resulted in
considerable print defects. The large and colorful border at the bottom
simultaneously lends a distinctive design element and a condition
challenge, as they are extremely susceptible to
chipping and wear.
The example offered here is card #25, Al Kaline, graded NM-MT 8. While Kaline never won an MVP Award in his Hall of Fame career, 1963 was one of two seasons which saw him finish second in MVP voting. The 28-year-old won his 6th of 10 career Gold Glove Awards in 1963. Remember his terrific season with this terrific card, featuring sharp corners and edges and a confident Kaline following through on his powerful swing. Slight diamond cutting with centering just a shade east on the canvas, as well as a minor registration issue on the colorful bottom border keep this one from grading even higher than it already has.
