Virgil "Spud" Davis was a block-of-granite catcher over sixteen National league seasons originally signed by the Yankees in 1926, who lost him in a forced-waiver claim to the Cubs, who in turn lost him in the Rule 5 draft to the Cardinals in 1928. He hung around in St. Louis long enough to play on the Gashouse Gang champs and was with the Athletics when he was depicted on this 1939 Play Ball. He's signed using his given name and in blue ballpoint, in a neat hand. There's some spottiness to the ink here and there, with the overall look quite striking.  The large signature is deemed PSA/DNA Authentic and is the sole signed version of this card in graded form.  Some paper loss is evident on the reverse, the product of long-ago scrapbook removal.  The card originates from the Shibe Park collection of autographed cards, an original owner collection carefully collected by a teenage boy who, in 1939 and 1940, obtained many autographs from players arriving at the train station near Shibe Park, and continued for many years to obtain signatures in person and through the mail.
