Catcher/first baseman Mike Gonzalez was one of the first Cuban players to have a successful major league career.  A member of the Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame, Gonzalez played 17 years in the majors, with five different teams.  Upon his retirement he joined the Cardinals coaching staff, actually managing the club for 16 games after manager Frankie Frisch was let go.  He continued as a coach through 1946, and was actually the third baseman who implored Enos Slaughter to hold up at third as he ran through the sign during his "mad dash" in game 7 of the '46 World Series.  Gonzalez is credited with coining the phrase "good field, no hit." The card originates from the Shibe Park collection of autographed cards, an original owner collection carefully collected by a teenage boy who, in 1939 and 1940, obtained many autographs from players arriving at the train station near Shibe Park, and continued for many years to obtain signatures in person and through the mail.  The card exhibits paper damage on the reverse, both loss and scrapbook residue.
