Well-worn original news service photo from the start of Walter Johnson's 18th season in Washington. According to the affixed paper caption Johnson had just blanked the visiting Philadelphia Athletics on Opening Day, 1924 at Griffith Stadium while earning the 101st shutout of his career. Johnson would conclude his 21 major league seasons as the all-time leader in shutouts with 110, a mark that still stands today and one that will likely never be broken. A variety of condition issues impact this example with crop marks and pinholes present towards the outer edges. Heavy creasing runs horizontally across the photo and a significant tear that once separated the photo in half runs from Johnson's right foot across his left shin from edge to edge. This tear has been repaired with virtually imperceptible archival tape, neatly joining the two halves together. A large portion of the border along the right edge is missing but does not impact the central image of Johnson as he delivers. Verso includes large credit stamping attributing the photo to Fotograms and pencil notations are scattered throughout. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
