This is a brown, lacquered wooden pencil box from the late 19th century that includes three interior compartments and sports a painted lid with full-color uniformed players from that time positioned side by side with their respective on-field positions called out beneath them in print. There are a number of nicks and chips to the artwork on top, but the illustrated players featured remain largely unobstructed despite the chipping. The measurements of the box are 2.25” deep x 7.75” wide x 2" high, missing the skeleton key that originally accompanied it, as is the case with every similar pencil box we have handled.
