From the Cincinnati studios of W. Dillon's Imperial Photo Gallery, comes a nicely composed image of Sylvester Wilson's "Black Stockings Nine," a barnstorming club made up of women from Cincinnati and Chicago. Photos like this were distributed or sold at games to generate interest in the team. The woman on left (Effie Earl, their shortstop) may have been fidgeting as she is slightly blurred while the rest of the team looks fierce and confident. Foxing can be seen, especially in the borders. The back features a wonderful Victorian style advertisement for the photographer, with some damage to the corners and more foxing. The statue of James A. Garfield still stands in Cincy, at Platt Park, which was built around it in on a central island in Garfield Place. This image, clearly taken at the same sitting as the more familiar image of this team (also featured in this auction) is a rarely seen one, far more scarce than the others.
