Exceedingly scarce pin from the 1896-97 Whitehead & Hoag set, commonly known as "Cameo Pepsin" due to the advertisement sometimes present on the reverse of the pins (though the pins are often found with or without Cameo Pepsin advertising). The first large set of pins to feature baseball players, more than 140 subjects are known and more are added to the checklist as they are discovered. Typically subject to image fading and other condition flaws due to age, the pins are quite condition sensitive today.

Hall of Famer Kid Nichols pitched for Boston for most of his career, winning 30 games or better in 7 of 8 seasons between 1891 and 1898, averaging a record of 21-12 with a 2.96 ERA and 291 innings pitched for the entirety of his 15-year career.  This pinback, the only Hall of Famer in this extensive collection of Whitehead & Hoag pins being offered in this auction, has been graded GOOD 2 by PSA, primarily due to the foxing on the image.  Regardless, any Hall of Famer from the issue is extremely desirable among advanced collectors regardless of grade; Nichols was one of the stars of his era and all his memorabilia is highly sought after.
