A sometimes prolific major league hitter, primarily with the Cincinnati Red Stockings of the American Association, Hick Carpenter wasn't from the sticks, nor the country (he was born in central Massachusetts, outside of Worcester) and gained his nickname due to his preference for hickory bats. The "Tagging, player on ground" pose is a classic, arranged shot in the set. There's been a loss to the photo in the upper right, with a light image present. With a reasonably clean Old Judge back and an angled factory cut.
