The 1954 Topps issue was the company's first to employ two different pictures of each subject on the card front an oversized portrait dominating the majority of the card with a smaller "action" shot superimposed in the lower corner. Each card also included a team logo. The set's distinctive design remains attractive among collectors today with a color background (in most cases) framed on three sides by white borders. The cards' larger size makes them susceptible to a variety of wear-related condition issues and they are notoriously difficult to find properly centered. Most important however is the inclusion of several key rookie cards notably Ernie Banks Al Kaline Moose Skowron Tommy Lasorda and of course Hank Aaron. The set presented here is a very strong one despite leaning toward the collector grades. Assembled in recent years by a long-time collector the cards were accumulated more for their overall aesthetics than their technical grade; the result is a particularly pleasing set of cards that technically falls on the lower end of the spectrum. Technical condition breakdown of the set would find 2% residing at EX-MT levels; 7% EX; 13% VG/EX; 40% VG; 30% G; and 10% lesser. Many as stated have far better eye appeal than the assigned grade. Similarly a breakdown of key cards would include #1 Ted Williams (PSA EX+ 5.5); #3 Monte Irvin (VG); #10 Jackie Robinson (G); #17 Phil Rizzuto (PSA GOOD 2); #20 Warren Spahn (G)' #30 Eddie Mathews (F); #32 Duke Snider (VG); #36 Hoyt Wilhelm (VG); #47 Richie Ashburn (PSA/DNA EX 5 signed in blue Sharpie); #50 Yogi Berra (F); #70 Larry Doby (VG); #90 Willie Mays (PSA EX-MT 6); #94 Ernie Banks (PSA 3 MC); #128 Hank Aaron (PSA VG 3); #201 Al Kaline (PSA VG 3); #250 Ted Williams (PSA 1.5). The average VCP value of the 11 cards graded by PSA (the cards listed above plus two commons) is $1 661. The 1954 Topps issue is an outstanding and popular set highly desirable for its attractiveness and large assortment of stars including key rookie cards of Hank Aaron Al Kaline and Ernie Banks. 250 cards total.
