In 1914, Baseball Magazine featured New York Giants fireball righthander Christy Mathewson on its Dec. cover. This lot features the entire magazine complete with the illustrated cover of “Matty” by renowned artist J.F. Kernan (1878-1958). It shows a somewhat contemplative Mathewson sitting in uniform, sporting his orange NY Giants warmup jacket. He retired after the 1916 campaign, so this appearance saluted the bulk of his outstanding big league career and marked the last of his thirteen 20-win (24) seasons. His cover story can be found starting on page 45 entitled “Reminiscences of Christy Mathewson” with a black-and-white action photo of the Hall of Famer completing a pitch. The magazine’s front and back covers show cracks and creases with a small strip of Scotch tape still clinging to the lower spine.
